Dave Bruce, District Coordinator of Bands and Head Director of Dorman High School Band

Dorman High School

Dave Bruce is the Spartanburg School District Six Coordinator of Bands and the head director of Dorman High School. Mr. Bruce directs the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Jazz Band. As coordinator Mr. Bruce oversees the Middle School Band programs, the Dorman Freshman Campus program, the High School Winter Guard, and the Indoor Percussion Ensemble. Mr. Bruce's bands have consistently earned Superior Ratings at local, state, regional and national competitions. He has served as an adjudicator in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Mr. Bruce began teaching in 1993 and became director of his Alma Mater in 2007. Mr. Bruce plays the trumpet with the orchestra at First Baptist Church Spartanburg. Dave Bruce is married to Jennifer and they have two sons, Connor and Colten.

Del Burton, Head of Percussion

Dorman High School

Del Burton became Director of Percussion Studies at Dorman High School in 2007. His duties include teaching all aspects of percussion including marching, concert and jazz. In addition, he assists with the Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and 9thgrade Symphonic Band. Prior to his appointment at Dorman, he served as Director of Bands at Clinton High School for eleven years and Greenwood High School fo rsix years. His bands have consistently received Superior ratings in concert and marching events throughout South Carolina and the southeast.

Mr. Burton has studied under the tutelage of Bruce Stevenson, Larry Joe Cook, Al Wojtera and Mark Camphouse. As a performer, Mr. Burton has worked with Michael W. Smith, CeCe Winans, Roger Williams, Kenny Rogers, Marvin Hamlisch and Kathy Lee Gifford, to name a few. He currently performs with the Greenwood Civic Chorale, Laurens County Chorale and as a freelance percussionist.

Mr. Burton has two children, daughter Kadie and son Peyton. He resides in Laurens with his Basset Hound, Pumpkin.

Denise Hembree, Freshman Campus Band Director

Dorman Freshman Campus

Denise Hembree is the Dorman Freshman Campus Band Director. Her duties include: All DFC Bands, Marching Band, Jazz Band and Concert Band. Mrs. Hembree is an alumni of Furman University. Mrs. Hembree has served as an adjudicator throughout South Carolina. Mrs. Hembree performs on her trombone with the orchestra at First Baptist Spartanburg and the Palmetto Posaunen. Mrs. Hembree became the DFC Band Director in 2007.

Jonathan Duke, Percussion Instructor and IT Technician

Dorman High School

Jonathan Duke is currently percussion instructor and IT technician at Dorman High School. Under his direction, the indoor ensemble at Dorman has won the SCBDA State Open Class Indoor Championships every time they’ve attended, won two WGI Percussion Regionals, made WGI open Class World semi-finals, and been the CIPA Open Class Champions the last two consecutive years. Before moving to South Carolina, Jonathan lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he taught Dalton high School, Soddy-Daisy high School, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s marching percussion ensembles. Jonathan has also taught and written for numerous other ensembles - including Spirit Of Atlanta drum and bugle corps, Magic Of Orlando drum and bugle corps, Scenic City drum and bugle corps, West Georgia College, as well as numerous Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina high school bands.

Kathryn Patterson, Assistant Director of Bands and Head of Colorguard

Dorman High School

Kathryn Patterson is the Assistant Director of Bands and Director of Colorguard at Dorman High School.  She assists with the Dorman Marching Cavaliers, Dorman Wind Ensemble and the Dorman Freshman Symphonic Band.  Ms. Patterson oversees all three Colorguard teams in District Six who compete in the Carolina Indoor Performance Association (CIPA) and Winter Guard International (WGI) competitions each year.  Ms. Patterson also teaches 5th grade beginning band at Anderson Mill, West View and Woodland Heights Elementary schools.

Ms. Patterson is a native of Easley, SC and is an alumni of Furman University in Greenville, SC.  Ms. Patterson taught in the Union County School System before joining Dorman in 2014.
